Between Here and the Yellow Sea edition by Nic Pizzolatto Literature Fiction eBooks
Pizzolatto's televised novel TRUE DETECTIVE was the impetus to read this collection of short stories, and it's quite evident that TRUE DETECTIVE wasn't a fluke. These tales from the Golf Coast region of America (so perhaps not technically Southern Gothic) takes us into the hearts, minds and stunted dreams of a cadre of damaged individuals seeking some sort of peace... or at least acceptance of and in the world they have established for themselves. As short stories, they impressively all hit a high bar; Pizzolatto's prose invites you into the cracked world of his characters in a visual and visceral way. Many of stories linger in the front of you mind long after you've put them down, and that's exactly what you want from any piece of narrative.

Between Here and the Yellow Sea edition by Nic Pizzolatto Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Very well written. Each short story made me feel something in different ways which is the sign of a very skilled writer. I expect big things from Mr pizzolatto between this, Galveston, and True Detective.
I wish I didn't see and love True Detective prior to reading this. The brilliance of True Detective is going to be an albatross around Mr. Pizzolatto's neck for some time. I try to be completely opened minded, but when you watch the first season of True Detective I think most people will fall into the trap I did; finding it hard to judge the works separately. I can't help but wonder would I have found this book to be a 5 star if I was capable of erasing True Detective from my mind. There are some great stories in here. Between Here and The Yellow Sea is a very hard book to put down, and it has great pacing. I am going to revisit this book in a couple of months after more distance from True Detective. I am sure I went in looking for more along the line of creepy mysteries rather than the very well told stories especially the first couple.
I first got interested in Pizzolatto's work after watching True Detective on HBO. I decided to search for anything of his that was available to read online, and as it turns out, a few years ago, The Atlantic had bought two of his stories that are featured in this book. They demonstrated the same sophisticated development of mood and environment coupled with characters who grapple with deep philosophical and important cultural questions that makes True Detective such a great show.
There were one or two stories that I didn't like as much as the others, but that's inevitable. If you want a book that is going to draw you into the worlds of each character and give you some things to reflect on, this is it. I also highly recommend his novel Galveston for the same reasons.
After True Detective, I had to go back and read the short stories of this writer. Pizzolatto writes with a wise understanding of people. His stories are a window into the human condition and have a strange solemn beauty.
Some of the best short stories I've ever read. Raw, real, and very entertaining, I read a ton of shorts and these are by far some of my favorites. I traced Nic's steps back from True Detective, to Galveston, to this. The man is a master storyteller. Fans of James Lee Burke, Ron Rash and Daniel Woodrell are sure to enjoy,
I absolutely love this collection of stories, as well as the author's novel "Galveston." "Ghost Birds" and "1987, The Races" would have to be my favorites here. The ne'er-do-well dad in the racetrack story evokes the same sense of hopelessness and impending doom as Tommy Wilhelm's character in Saul Bellow's "Seize the Day." There's strong emotional material throughout these stories, and they will stay with you for a long time. Very highly recommended.
Pizzolatto is a talented fiction writer. Galveston is a wonderful short novel and of course season one of True Detective was one of the best series every on television. I recommend this to anyone who likes literary fiction and enjoys the landscape of the south. He is a master with words. Hopefully season three of TD will be good.
